MINISTERS: PROF. CHINEDU NEBO & KABIRU TANIMU TURAKI
MINISTERS: PROF. CHINEDU NEBO & KABIRU TANIMU TURAKI

The Senate today confirmed the nominations of Mr Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (Kebbi State) and Professor Chinedu Nebo (Enugu State) as ministers of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.President Goodluck Jonathan last week forwarded their names to the Senate for confirmation.

While fielding questions from senators, Nebo admitted the existence of a mafia that was against the repositioning of the sector and promised to chase them out if assigned to the Ministry of Power.

“Some highly placed people are believed to be witches responsible for the problems in our power sector, I believe God will give me the power to chase out these demons”, he said.

Nebo added that uninterrupted power supply in the country was not a mirage, but stated that he would have to study “what is in place to be able to give a date” for a turn-around.

He decried the neglect of the nation’s steel sector and appealed to the Senate to assist the executive by harping on the need to revive it.

“Ajaokuta Steel company remains a giant that is camatose. If it is a conspiracy problem, why do we allow ourselves to be used to short-change our children yet unborn?” he queried.

Earlier, Tanimu said if assigned the Ministry of Defence, he would ensure better inter-agency collaboration especially in the sharing of information that would aid the fight against terrorism.

According to him, the facelessness of the insurgents has made the fight against terror more difficult in Nigeria than it is in other nations.

Turaki, who also stressed the need to train and retrain the military for civil operations, regretted that the nation’s Police Force had suffered a serious decay with “legion and legendary” problems.

He however expressed optimism that the reforms introduced by the incumbent administration would yield positive results.

Announcing the confirmation of the nominees’ appointments, Senate President David Mark said they were frank in answering questions from senators, charging them, however, to match their words with their actions to be able to perform well. “I just hope the so-called demons will not interfere in your performance”, he jokingly added.
