Confessions: Why Obasanjo Was Our Choice In 1999 – IBB

IBB-and-OBJFormer Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, yesterday, on a weekly programme on Liberty FM – a privately owned radio station in Kaduna – “Guest-of-the Week”, explained the rationale behind the choice of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as the country’s President in 1999.

The gap-toothed General said beside the fact that only a person who was capable of saving the country from disintegration was required, “The emergence of Obasanjo came as a result of what happened in the country.

“The country was in a very serious crisis and we had to find the solution to these problems. Therefore we need a leader. A leader who is known in the country. So, we looked for a man who has been involved in the affairs of this country, who held position either in the military or in the cabinet and who has certain beliefs about Nigeria. All of us that were trained in the armed forces, there is one belief that you cannot take away from us, we believe in this country because this is part of our training. We fought for this country.

“So when you have a situation like that, you need a leader that has all these attributes and, quite frankly, he quickly came to mind. We have one who knows the north, knows the south and who fought a war,” he said.
