The Kebbi Government on Wednesday said it spent N300 million on the registration of students for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO).
The Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Abdullahi Kamba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi that 3,565 students participated in the examinations. He said that the state government would continue to settle examination fees for the qualified students.
“Students who performed below expectation in the qualifying examination, school attendance and other considerations should blame themselves as government would only consider those who excelled.”
Kamba said the state government would settle registration fees to examination bodies to hasten timely release of results to enable students seek admission into tertiary institutions. He said that education was free at all levels, but “government will only invest resources on students that performed well in examinations. Any student who failed to obtain the mandatory four credits in the qualifying examination will sponsor himself.”
The Commissioner said the state government would sustain the promotion and quest for education, stressing that feeding of students was increased by 100 per cent, while JAMB forms were distributed at no cost to candidates. He called on stakeholders in education to further support government’s drive towards improving the sector to achieve its goals. (NAN)
