National Human Rights Commission To Identify, Prosecute Those Behind Electoral Malpractices Since 2003

Chidi_OdinkaluThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun a campaign against electoral irregularities in Nigeria from 2003 till date.

NHRC said it hoped to achieve this through an initiative that will help identify culprits and kick start a process of prosecuting them.

The Chairman of the commission, Chidi Odinkalu, who made this known at a news conference in Abuja, said that his commission together with the Ford Foundation research project will reveal culprits in three months.

According to him, the first phase of the initiative will involve identifying those previously indicted for electoral malpractices by six members of a technical working group drawn from the geo-political zones.

The interim report will be presented to the public with the NHRC vowing to prosecute all those identified by the technical working group.

The commission added that naming people indicted or increasing the number of judges sitting on election tribunals is not the only solution.
