Amaechi Threatens To Stop Funding Of State Police Command Over Feud With Police Commissioner

AmaechiEmbattled governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has threatened to stop funding of the State Police Command over the political stance taken by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu.

Governor Amaechi who has maintained his grounds on the removal of the police chief from the state, gave the warning when the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr. Gordon Bozimo led a delegation on a courtesy call at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Amaechi, who has a no-love lost relationship with his police commissioner, decried the recent abduction of three corps members serving in the state, noting that the incident was part of the growing insecurity occasioned by the incompetence and political leanings of the Mr Joseph Mbu.

He said: “The issue at hand is one that we should talk to the IG, talk to the President and talk to those in Abuja that transferred that Commissioner of Police that Port Harcourt is becoming unsafe, 3 corps members were kidnapped recently, it would worsen when we stop funding the Police because we would soon stop funding.

“The person you brought here is a politician, he attends their political meetings and there’s  no way I can stop that, my fear is that his continued stay would ruin the fast growing economy of Port Harcourt, I have no control over the Commissioner of Police though the constitution said so.”

In his remarks, Mr. Bozimo called for the immediate release of the kidnapped corps members because according to him, “if Port Harcourt is not also safe, they will avoid Rivers State as they avoid Borno or Yobe.”
