Arsenal have made a £10m bid for Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his injury ravaged midfield.
The Gunners, who lost their opening weekend fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday, have been hit by injuries to Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby, while Jack Wilshere is yet to return to full match fitness.
The Magpies are yet to formally reject the offer for the 27-year-old Frenchman, Cabaye, but reports suggest the club will swiftly turn it down.
Arsenal have not made any comment on the bid, but in the meantime, Wenger has been linked with a number of players from the Premier League with the London Evening Standard reporting that the club is preparing a £35m double raid on Swansea pair of Michu and Ashley Williams.
Arsenal’s only summer recruit has been the free transfer of 20-year-old Frenchman Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre.
The club travels to Istanbul on Wednesday for the first leg of their European Champions League group stage play-off against Fenerbahce.
