Governors Of Inland Basin States Shelve Meeting On Oil And Gas

The Chairman, Northern Governors Forum, Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger, on Wednesday said the forum had postponed the inaugural meeting of governors of Inland Basin States earlier scheduled for Thursday.

Aliyu had invited the governors from 13 northern states situated under the region’s sedimentary basin for the meeting.

He said in a statement issued in Minna that the essence of the meeting was to enable hem brainstorm on the modalities and action plan to kick start oil and gas exploration in the region.

The statement, signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, said the meeting was postponed and a new date would be announced.

The forum had earlier expressed support to the ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to explore oil in the sedimentary basin of Northern Nigeria.

Aliyu commended the decision of the Federal Government to harness the resources in Sokoto, Chad and Bida basins as well as in Benue trough, which hydrocarbon contents were yet to be developed and estimated.

The inland basin states comprise Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Kogi, kebbi, Niger, Sokoto,Zamfara, Kwara, Nasarawa, Taraba, Yobe and Plateau. (NAN)
