Former President Shehu Shagari on Monday in Sokoto said the proposed national conference would foster peace and unity in Nigeria.

Shagari made the remark when members of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the proposed conference paid him a courtesy visit.

According to him, the proposed conference will afford Nigerians the opportunity to discuss all the problems afflicting the nation.

He said the conference came at the right time, “as we are in a democracy when the views of the people are supreme.”

The former president said the conference would enable leaders to know the basic problems facing the country.

He commended members of the committee for the visit, saying: “it is good as you are going round Nigeria to collate the various opinions of Nigerians.”

The Chairman of the committee, Dr Femi Okoruonmo, said the visit was in consideration of the former president’s indelible contributions to the country’s socio-political development.

He described Shagari as a detribalised Nigerian, committed to national development, peace and unity. (NAN)
