Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed the appointment of Tim Sherwood as Andre Villas-Boas (AVB) successor on Monday night.
The former-England international have been appointed on a full-time basis and will take over the reins at White Hart Lane for the next 18 months.
As interim boss, the 44-year-old guided the ‘Lilly Whites’ to a 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday in the wake of last week’s 2-1 loss to West Ham in the League Cup.
“We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward,” Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told the club’s official website.
Sherwood, who lifted the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1995, joined Tottenham as a player in 1999 but left in 2003, only to return as part of the club’s coaching staff in 2-008 under the then-Harry Redknapp.
AVB left White Hart Lane after winning just two of his last seven matches, coupled with heavy losses to Manchester City and Liverpool.
Sherwood was called upon by Levy to take charge of the North London club while serving as a technical co-ordinator. He has no previous managerial experience.
“We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward,” Levy added.
A number of managers had been linked with the Spurs job since AVB’s departure. Former England manager Fabio Capello, Iran national team coach Carlos Queiroz, Swansea boss Michaek Laudrop, ex-Spurs manager Glenn Hurdle and Guus Hiddink have all been considered for the position.
“We were extremely reluctant to make a change mid-season, but felt we had to do so in the Club’s best interests.
“We have a great squad and we owe them a Head Coach who will bring out the best in them and allow them to flourish and enjoy a strong, exciting finish to the season,” Levy explained.
Sherwood, whose first official match as Tottenham manager will be against West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day, will work alongside Chris Ramsey, Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund in the club’s dugout.
