Fire Kills Couple In Benue

An early morning fire outbreak on Saturday killed a couple at Akpehe, a settlement in Makurdi, the Benue Police Command has said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the couple, Mr Raymond Avaan, and his wife, Florence, got married in 2003.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ezeala, told the NAN in Makurdi that the couple was burnt beyond recognition in their apartment.

“The incident took place this morning; and the couple was burnt to death.

They were the only people in the apartment,” Ezeala said.

He said that an investigation would be carried out on the cause of the fire.

NAN reports that Raymond was a teacher with the Anglican Nursery and Primary School, Akpehe.

His neighbour, Mr James Terwase, blamed the fire on unsteady electricity voltage, saying that residents of the place had been living in fear because of that.

He described the couple as peace-loving, describing the incident as unfortunate. [NAN]
