A top official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has predicted that some Super Eagles fringe players and others, who were not part of the 2013 African Nations Cup (Afcon)-winning campaign stand a chance to make the squad for the 2014 World Cup.
Key performers at the last year’s tournament hosted in South Africa and other notables during the team’s successful World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign are poised to be named in coach Stephen Keshi’s 23-man squad for Brazil, come July.
But with ‘Big Boss’ set to name his 40-man provisional squad list soon, chairman of the NFF technical committee Chris green forecasts one dominated by notable figures over the last 12 months cum few players outside the core crop.
“We are not going to have an open camp ahead of the World Cup, but I expect some new faces in the team,” said Green.
“I am sure if one asked Keshi to name team that will play Argentina today, he will give the list. But we can’t rule out surprises as it was in USA 1994 when players like Chidi Nwannu and Michael Eneramo who were not part of the team from the beginning got their chance, make good use of it and did well at the World Cup.”
