Following his alleged interest in the Sokoto North Senatorial District seat in the National Assembly come 2015, Governor Aliyu Wamakko has been advised by the current occupier of the seat, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Maccido, to look elsewhere because his “time is up” and his “ideas are no longer needed”.
Maccido, who is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Wednesday, told journalists in Abuja that he refused to defect with Wammako to the All Progressives Congress because the governor was no longer popular among the electorate, hence he could pose no threat to his return to the Senate next year.
He said, “If you see that your time is up in a particular place and your ideas are no longer needed I don’t think there’s any need for you to stay there anymore. You have, as they say, overdone your stay.
“As far as I am concerned, if this particular institution that is in place now in Sokoto is no longer in need of my services, So, I don’t think I need to stay with them”.
Maccido claimed that he represents the Sultanate in the Senate, and that the institution had been in existence for more than 200 years, stressing that even if he does not make it to the senate, the Sultanate would still remain relevant.
He added, “I am not here as Ahmed Maccido. I am not sitting here as Ahmed Maccido. I have an institution that remains relevant and has remained relevant for the past 200 years.
“Even if I am not there now, that institution would still be there. Whoever is in this position would still be relevant”.
Asked whether he had consulted the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad, on his 2015 ambition, he said, “I will not tell you that”.
He added, “One thing you should understand about my institution is that it’s an institution I told you earlier has remained relevant for the past 200 years and I was chosen by that particular institution, by the people involved in that particular institution.
“They told me to go and contest and I said okay. So, when I choose to do what I do, in most cases, I am not telling you that I’ve spoken with the Sultan and he told me to go back to the PDP, you won’t hear that from me but I have made contacts in that institution and I realised that the best bet for that institution was to remain in the PDP”.
