Property Worth N500m Destroyed As Rain Storm Wreaks Havoc In Imo

A devastating rainstorm swept through Okpala autonomous community in Ngor Okpala local government area of Imo State last weekend, leading to loss of properties worth millions of naira.

According to the villagers, their loss was over N500 million.

The storm was said to have cleared everything on its way, including cash crops, electrical installations, as well as public and private buildings along its part.

Apart from the flood, which submerged some family homes, one of the public buildings that was worst hit was Okpala Secondary School, where roofs of three of the school buildings were completely blown off.

A student of the college, who simply gave his name as Emeka, expressed serious worry over the disaster, even as he wondered what they will do in the days ahead.

“Teaching and learning would be greatly affected by the destruction, unless government steps in immediately to remedy the ugly situation

Narrating the incident to newsmen, who rushed to the community to ascertain the level of devastation, the President General, Okpala Development Union, ODU, Mr. Roland Odoemenam, lamented that electrical installations were not spared by the ravaging storm.

“High and low tension electric wires, electric poles, its accessories, as well as a 200 KVA electric transformer that provides electricity to the community, were all destroyed by the rainstorm”, Odoemenam lamented.

He passionately appealed to Imo State Government and all good spirited individuals and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the community.
