Manchester United is presently tasked with the responsibility of selecting the right man for its vacant managerial position.
Interim boss Ryan Giggs is not considering a long-term stay at the helm of the Old Trafford club at the moment, following the dismissal of David Moyes on Tuesday. The Welshman is expected to take charge of the remaining four matches of the ongoing season.
Among the names linked with the Premier League champions are Dutch national team coach, Louis van Gaal, Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti, Borussia Dortmund boss, Jurgen Klopp, Paris St-Germain (PSG) coach and ex-United defender, Laurent Blanc, Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho.
However, most of names mentioned in the media as possible successor to David Moyes have played down their link with the club while admitting their respect for the 20-time English champions.
Mourinho, 51, completely ruled himself out of the running for the ‘Red Devils’ job during his pre-match new conference ahead of Sunday’s visit to Liverpool’s Anfield.
“(I’m) of course not (in the race),” Mourinho said. “How can somebody think about it?
“I left Real Madrid to come to Chelsea specifically. I signed a four-year contract with Chelsea. I told Chelsea they never have to worry about me because I don’t want to leave. I stay as long as the club wants me to stay.”
The ‘Special One’ has won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, the fourth manager after Tomislav Ivic, Ernst Happel and Giovanni Trapattoni to attain such feat.
Chelsea hosts Atletico Madrid in the return leg of their Champions League semi-final tie on Wednesday and trails league leaders Liverpool by five points ahead of Sunday’s ‘probable’ title decider.
Real’s boss Carlo Ancelotti laughed off suggestions he is in line to take over at united.
“I’m really happy here,” the former Chelsea and PSG coach said in his pre-match news briefing ahead of the La Liga club’s game against Osasuna on Saturday.
“I’m lucky to work at the best team in the world.
“I respect Man United a lot. I was disappointed for David Moyes, but my place at the moment is here.”
Ancelotti, 54, was sacked the following season after he led the Stamford League club to wining the Premier League and FA cup double in 2009/10.
He returned to management with PSG in December 2011 and led the Ligue 1 outfit to their first championship in 19 years.
Following Jose Mourinho’s departure for Chelsea last summer, Ancelotti took over the reins of the Santiago Bernebeu.
Real are six points behind leaders Atletico, having played one game less than their Madrid neighbour, in the race for the La Liga title. They visit German and European champions Bayern Munich next Tuesday for the Champions League last 4 return leg, having edged the Bavarians 1-0 at home.
Klopp said: “I find it a little uncomfortable having to turn somebody down without them making an enquiry. But it seems like I have got to do it anyway. There are about 1,000 reasons why am so happy to be working here (at Borussia Dortmund).
The 46-year-old Dortmund boss has won the Bundesliga twice with Dortmund since he replaced Thomas Doll as manager in 2008. He also guided the ‘Black and Yellows’ to last season’s Champions League final in Wembley, in which they lost to arch rivals Bayern Munich.
The German extended his Dortmund contract until 2018 in October last year.
He likewise admitted United are a “really great club”, but adds he is not tempted to leave the Westfalenstadion. Barcelona are also interested in Klopp.
It has got to be a long summer for United for various reasons, but interim boss Giggs is well motivated in his new-found role.
“It has been a difficult week for the club,” Giggs said in his first news conference in charge of United. It was a shock to me on Tuesday when I spoke to Ed Woodward (club executive vice-chairman) and he informed me David Moyes was leaving and asked me to takeover.
“It has been a whirlwind week for me but one I have enjoyed. It is different, chaotic; you can never imagine what you have to do and the things that are entailed with becoming Manchester United manager.”
Giggs, 40, has no managerial experience whatsoever and only became a player coach at his career-long club on July 4th, following the appointment of the out-of-favour Scot, 50.
He has won 13 league, 4 FA Cup, three League Cup and two Champions League winner’s medals on his road to becoming the player with the most record of competitive appearance for the Manchester Reds (671).
