A Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty last week to beating his two cats to death with a golf club in June of 2013.

Christopher Bisbee, 32, told police that he felt “betrayed” by his pets when one of them scratched him, according to the Erie Times-News. The Erie man then killed both animals by striking them with golf clubs multiple times.

Investigators responded to a tip and found the cats’ bodies in Brisbee’s trash.

On Monday, he took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to a second-degree misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals. The charge has a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

In a 2013 study by the Animal Legal Defense Fund that ranked states from best to worst in terms of animal protection laws, Pennsylvania came in at number 41.
