Louis van Gaal has told Manchester United to make one final push to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels worth £20 million, reports Metro.

The report claims that Manchester United officials asked Van Gaal whether or not they should make the take-it-or-leave-it offer, with the Dutch coach
sanctioning it as well as a giant contract offer.

Hummels is settled at the Bundesliga club, but Manchester United believe big wages can tempt him to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have been trying desperately to replace Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, but have so far failed to add a centre-back to the squad. The
veteran pair both ran out of contract this summer after over 10-years in the Manchester United defence.

At least two centre-backs are wanted by Van Gaal and they have also been trying. to agree a deal for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.

Hummels, 25, has long been a target for Manchester United and Metro claim that they have tried and failed to sign him in each of the last three transfer windows.

The defender has been a force in the Dortmund backline and is considered a key player for Jurgen Klopp. Having lost a number of high profile stars over the last two years, Dortmund will be reluctant to see another one leave.

La Liga giants If Manchester United do manage to agree a £20 million deal with Borussia Dortmund, it is likely to
alert both Real Madrid and Barcelona, both of whom have expressed an interested in the Germany international in the recent past.

The two La Liga clubs will obviously hold more appeal than Manchester United, who will not contest in any European football next season.{Gms}
