Abuja Closes Two Illegal Hospitals

Illegal HospitalThe FCT Primary Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee, PHERMC, has closed two illegal hospitals in Lugbe, Abuja Municipal Area Council.

The Registrar of the Committee, Ibrahim Tata, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday.

Mr. Tata said the clinics were Gado’s Clinic and Maternity Home and Lugbe Clinic and Maternity.

According to him, unqualified medical personnel operate the two hospitals in an unhygienic environment.

“The owners of the clinics failed to meet the required conditions for licensing, including suitable infrastructure and qualified personnel.

“FCT Administration refused to issue licence to Gado Clinic when its proprietor applied for it in 2004, due to poor drugs storage facility and unqualified medical personnel.

“Gado Clinic is also in possession of Analgin injections banned since 1999; the owner of the hospital who is a nurse also performs the role of a medical doctor, endangering lives of patients.

“Gado has been sealed up three times; we have finally handed the owner of the hospital to the police.

“She will sign an undertaking that she will adhere to due process before FCTA will reopen the hospital”, he said.

He further said that the two hospitals violated medical ethics and best global practices.

The registrar said his committee would adopt more measures to eradicate illegal and substandard hospitals in the territory, especially in rural areas.

He, however, advised Abuja residents to always attend hospitals with adequate infrastructure and qualified personnel.
