Jakande To FG: Don’t Set Nigeria On Fire

Lateef JakandeThe first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, has advised those in position of authority to be wary of actions that could lead to chaos in the country.

Alhaji Jakande bemoaned the “militarisation of democracy” tactics employed by the Federal Government in Ekiti State and now Osun, describing the development as unfortunate.

The elder statesman said never in the history of the country has election been as tense as is the case in Osun.

He said: “The electorate should be allowed to freely choose their leader without molestation, inducement or harassment.

“The idea of deploying large numbers of security operatives is wrong and should not be encouraged. It discourages the electorate from discharging their duty and gives room for impunity”.

Jakande pointed out that those who are heating up the polity do not have the country’s interest at heart.

Nigerians, he warned, should also beware of desperate politicians who want to win elections at all cost.

He enjoined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain its neutrality at all times, saying that allegations of connivance with any particular political party does not augur well for the integrity of the commission.
