Olympiakos Sign Barca’s Afellay on a Season-Long Loan

Greek club Olympiakos have confirmed it has signed Dutch midfielder Ibrahim Afellay on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The 28-year-old signed for Barcelona from Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven in 2011 but has been blighted by several injury problems.

He spent the 2012/13 season on loan at German club Schalke, but only made ten Bundesliga appearances following a series of recurrent muscle injuries.

Afellay was sidelined for the most of last season on his return to Catalonia.

He was a 90th minute substitute as Barcelona beat Manchester United in the 2010/11 Uefa Champions League final at Wembley. The Dutchman then ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee in training in September, the following season and was sidelined for seven months.

Subsequent injury problems has had Afellay make just 35 appearances in all competitions for Barca and is set to run out of contract in 2015.

The Moroccan-born player has scored five times in 44 appearances for Holland and was a member of the Dutch’s team which lost the 2010 World Cup final to Spain.
