Martins Set for Sounders FC Contract Renewal- Report

Obafemi Martins has reportedly agreed a contract renewal with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Seattle Sounders.

According to Frank Dell’ Apa of the Boston Globe, the Nigeria international and Sounders have reached agreement on an improved 2-year.

The ex-Inter Milan and Newcastle striker’s current contract reportedly worth $1.75 million per year runs out in 2015 with an option for further one-year extension. However, the significant pay rise in the prospective deal, basically thought to be double his current salary and expected to be finalised soon, could have him move up a place to 8th in the list of highest paid Designated Player in the MLS.

It is yet unclear if the rumoured deal is an extension of his current contract or an entirely new deal. If Martins and the club see through the new contract, it could serve as a precedence for the Nigerian’s longest stay at a single team since Inter Milan (from 2001-06).

The 29-year-old is having a campaign of a lifetime in the United States, having scored 13 goals in 24 league matches. he only recently helped Sounders clinch the US Open Cup.
