Speaker House of Assembly Aminu Tambuwal’s defection to the All progressives Congress (APC) has continued getting kickbacks from different quarters, the latest being the Police.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, Thursday ordered that the policemen attached to the office of the Speaker be withdrawn.

According to a statement issued by the Force spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, the action was due to Tambuwal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC.

Defending its action, the police said it was done “having regard to the clear provision of section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”

Tambuwal had during the House plenary on wednesday announced his defection to the APC, after which he adjourned the House sitting till December 3, a decision some commended as a smart move as two-third of members of the House have to vote to remove him. With the House adjourned till December, if there was any chance Tambuwal will be removed, it won’t be until December.

With the PDP holding majority seats in the House of Reps, calls for the removal of Tambuwal as speaker have increased.

However, the leadership of the APC has maintained that no one can remove the Speaker as “There’s no provision in the constitution that says the speaker must come from the majority but from one of the members.”
