City Must Turn to the Future after CSKA Misery- Kompany

Vincent Kompany agrees Manchester City were simply not at their best in Wednesday’s Champions League loss to CSKA Moscow.

City are on the brink of elimination from Europe’s elite club competition following the 2-0 defeat by the Russian champions at the Etihad Stadium.

“I think the result says enough,” Kompany said. “There is no way we can afford to lose points against a team we should beat every day, especially at home.

“But it happened and somehow you need to turn towards the future again.”

Coach Manuel Pellegrini’s men had Yaya Toure and Fernandinho sent off on a miserable night that ended with them bottom of Group E with just two points from as many games.

City must now beat group leaders Bayern Munich in their next match on November 25, else; face early elimination with a game to spare should there be a winner in the other match between CSKA and Roma.

“One of the good things about football is that there is always another chance whether it is in this competition or the Premier League,” the Belgium national team and Man City skipper said.

“It won’t take a lot for everyone at the club to realise we need to do better. “

The Premier League champions have twice failed to progress to the knockout stages in the past three seasons and has never gone beyond the round of 16.

That dismal form represents a stark contrast with their achievements on domestic front, where they have won two league titles, the League Cup and FA Cup in the same period.

“Let’s put things into perspective,” added Kompany. “We are not a club who has been there for 20 years and you don’t go from never playing in the Champions League to winning it.

“We are trying to put milestones down every year and so far we have been quite successful.”
