Nigeria’s International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member, Habu Gumel, yesterday returned as president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC). The former director of facilities at the National Sports Commission, (NSC) polled 19 votes as against Sani Ndanusa’s 17 to unseat the incumbent from the post he vacated four years ago. Ndanusa had similarly sacked Gumel who was incumbent NOC president at the election which held in Dutse, Jigawa State.
Immediately after his election, Gummel promised to reposition the Olympic movement to the enviable height it occupied previously.
“I am humbled by your demonstration of love and solidarity,” he said.
“I am going to need the every member of the Olympic Family to re-build our committee,” stressed Gummel who is also a past president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
Others re-elected, include the Sec-Gen. Tunde Popoola, who narrowly defeated Olabanji Oladapo, 17-16.
Johnny Hamakim, an army major general defeated two other candidates for the post of Deputy Sec-Gen by 23 votes.
The defeated candidates include, George Ashiru (8 votes) and Dans Adokiye who secured only three votes.
Aliyu Bappa, scored 18 votes to defeat Olatunde Makanju, who scored 17 votes.
Former Public Relations Officer, Tony Ubani defeated an unknown, Comfort Nwankwo, 31-5 votes.
Those elected unopposed are include: AFN President, Solomon Ogba as first vice president, Acquatic Federation President, Babtunde Fatayi Williams, 2nd vice and 3rd vice, Tijani Umar, president of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF).
