Injured Ajax Striker Sigthórsson Out Until 2015

Ajax striker Kolbeinn Sigthórsson will be out on the sidelines for the remainder of the year, the Dutch club has announced.

The Iceland international picked up an ankle injury in the 5-0 win against Willem II at the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday, having to leave the pitch shortly after scoring the opening goal.

It has been confirmed that Sigthórsson has suffered a tear in an outer ankle ligament and will be out for 3 or 4 weeks. He will of course miss the decider against APOEL on Wednesday.

Ajax coach Frank De Boer said: “It’s not a serious injury, but it’s possible to miss three weeks because of it. It’s a shame, because it was a careless move by Messaoud. And I’d rewarded Kolbeinn with the starting spot thanks to the way he’d been performing in training.”

Ajax are third in Group F and can no longer advance beyond the group stages but requires a point in their final game to enter the draws for the round of 32 of the Uefa Europa League.
