Ekweremadu, Ndume Slug It Out For Deputy Senate President [UPDATED]

Ali-IkeFollowing the election unopposed, of Senator-elect Bukola Saraki as President of the 8th Senate, an election is presently ongoing in the Senate Chambers for the Deputy President of the Senate.

The nominees for the position are immediate past Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party and Mohammed Ali Ndume of the All Progressives Congress.

The motion for Ekweremadu’s nomination was moved by Senator-elect Abiye Sekibo and seconded by Senator-elect Olaka Nwogu while the motion for Ndume’s nomination was moved by Senator-elect Muhammad Ubali Shittu and seconded by Senator-elect Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim.

Following reading of the rules and regulations guiding the election into the office of Deputy President of the Senate by the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, Ben Efeturi, Senators-elect are being called in alphabetical order according to state, to cast their votes.

Senator-elect Ike Ekweremadu has been elected Deputy President of the 8th Senate after he defeated his closest challenger, Mohammed Ali Ndume.

Ekweremadu garnered 54 votes while Ndume got 20. One person absented from participating in the voting process.
