Two separate explosions targeting a Mosque and a restaurant occurred Sunday evening in Jos, Plateau, killing an unknown number of people, Police says.
One eye witness told Vanguard that “the first explosion went off at about 9:14pm at a Bauchi road shopping complex a few meters to the Bauchi park and University of Jos and the second explosion was heard about four minutes later.”
The witness said a Hilux van belonging to Sheikh Jingir and other private vehicles were conveying the dead and injured to hospitals in the city after the explosion occurred at a popular food seller’s shop.
The second explosion was said to have occurred close to the popular Yan Taya mosque where Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir says his Ramadan tafsir. Other reports say the bomb went off in the midst of Muslim faithful listening to a Ramadan lecture.
Jingir, who recently condemned and disavowed Boko Haram, was thought to have been the target of the bombings.
Another witness identified as Abubakar Shehu told Reuters: “We saw two or three vehicles coming from different directions and we started hearing gunshots from all angles and then a very loud bang, like a bomb being thrown into the mosque.”
The attack came just hours after a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at a church in Potiskum, Yobe State, killing six people.
Although no persons or group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, they came in familiar styles Islamist extremist group Boko Haram have used in past attacks.
