Nigerians Want A Referendum On Biafra

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) are in the frontline of the campaign for a new state. While the federal government has insisted it is committed to keeping Nigeria as one nation, the groups have continued to make their demand for a new stage with frequent protests at every possible avenue.

While the arguments in favour of the Biafran secession, to many, are not strong enough, pro-Biafras are within their rights to ask for sel-determination. Many Nigerians seem to think so.

According to a poll by online news platform The Cable, 88 percent of voters on the topic ‘SHOULD THERE BE A REFERENDUM ON BIAFRA?’ said Yes; 11 percent said No and 1 percent remain undecided.

The poll was triggered by the referendum in Britain to determine whether the country should remain in the European Union or not. Britons voted to leave, although the Scottish would have loved to stay and voted to remain in the EU but their votes did not count. Now, the U.K.’s northernmost country is thinking of leaving the United Kingdom. A vote on whether to leave the UK or remain in 2014 ended with Scotland remaining. Another vote may happen.

Some Nigerians think the country needs to learn from Britain. What do you think?

  1. Referendum is the right way to go. As civilized people, and taking clue from Britain, organizing a referendum is the way to go. If the Biafrans decide to go so be it and if they decide to stay, then no more Biafra issue. Then all hands will be on deck to build a united country void of immense corruption. But if they decied to leave, then the SW, North and SS can then Unite and build a great country.

    • I just wanted to let you know that there is no SS in cardinal points. Go back to school or ask you old teacher. North, East, West and South. In South there can only be going East or West so you can’t stand on South and going South. This the war strategy the British government and Gowan used to win the war.

      Hope you will understand.

  2. Biafra is SE/SS they used divided and rule to steal the Biafran oil wealth, their game is over.

Referendum shouldn’t be in the picture because Biafra is already a nation, they are being forced by the British and other world super powers to answer the name of the zoo called Nigeria.
From 1970 the civil war ended, the operators of the zoo knows that Biafra can never accept to be part of Nigeria.

Now they are asking for REFERENDUM but the Biafrans are saying, NO, GO YOUR WAY, AND LET ME BE, I’M NOT ASKING TO CREAT A NEW COUNTRY BUT THE RESTORATION OF MY NATION BRITISH DEPRIVED ME OF IN 1967.

  3. The United Kingdom EU referendum has taught all peoples a big lesson of how national and international issues and relationship should be handled in the modern world. The killing and destruction life and property of the ancient world has been scrapped and replaced with wisdom, understanding and progress of the technological modern days.
Nigerian government should embrace this modern system of peaceful resolutions instead of the might is right which does nobody any good. The federal government of Nigerian should demonstrate to the world that Nigeria can conduct her affairs peacefully without the trumpets of war and bloodshed.
Nigeria should conduct referendum on Biafran which only those who are agitating will vote and freely choose where they want to belong.
Any unbiased observer will testify that the BIAFRAN agitators are not ready to throw in the towel. To force them to continue living in Nigeria is a terrible disservice to Nigeria which will do country to backwardness and deterioration. But a free referendum will decide the issue once and for all.

  4. Big Shame to Nigerian Govt for spilling the blood of Biafra activists who called for Biafra Self-determination. Will they now learn from their Creator, Britain? Briitish citizens made their choice for the good of their country. But in Nigeria,Intellectually challenged and impaired men keep saying that those calling for Freedom from Nigeria are Criminals of Treasonable felony. Nigeria should learn from their Slave master, Britain and stop Relocating Army headquarters to Eastern Region to kill unarmed Peaceful protesters. Nigeria cannot be one because the people are not one. One Nigeria is as a result oil and the interests of Northern Nigeria and their foreign criminal allies. #FreeBiafra

    • A referendum in Nigeria has become inevitable to determine the Biafran issue .However the international community especially the UN should supervise the process .There should be a legal framework that would ensure free and unhindered campaign by both sides, of the divide. , transparent and credible process void of rigging , violence and military involvement ,which are regular features of every Nigeria election since independence. This way the outcome will be credible and reflect the true will of the Biafran peoples. Both the Federal Government of Nigeria and Biafran agitators must undertake before the international community to respect the outcome of the referendum. . Regards. Dominic

  5. SOME IDIOTS ARE SAYING THAT IGBOS WANT BIAFRA BECAUSE OF OIL IN SOUTHSOUTH,THAT IS WRONG.TO START WITH ALMOST THE WHOLE STATES OF THE SOUTH EAST HAVE OIL.MORE OVER IN THE BIAFRA WE ARE TALKING ABOUT EVERY COMMUNITY WILL MANAGE WHATEVER RESOURCES GOD HAS ENDOWED WITH THEM AND CONTRIBUTE LITTLE TOTHE CENTRE.STILL YET IGBOS ARE THE JAPAN OF AFRICA.

  6. Let there be a referendum on the issue of Biafra since so many lives have been lost over it. Britons have shown us the wise way of solving problems without war or killing people. UN must as a matter of urqency address the issue of Biafra Freedom and STOP pretending over it. Because once the United Nations add its voice to it the matter is over as the Nigerian Government won’t say NO to the Might of UN.

  7. Yes ooooo. Biafra is the way! Pls and pls there was never anything like ss/se. We now know ourselves. I am 1000% a Biafran. I am half ibibio and half igbo from my father’s side. I so much love the combination. Travel occasionally to the both communities but I reside in Enugu, a beautiful city with very peaceful people. I can’t even tell a difference between the two tribes. God pls bring Biafra today or tomorrow.
