Senate Committee To Propose Total Ban On Importation Of Second-Hand Cars

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatization, Senator Ben Murray Bruce has disclosed that his committee will propose a total ban on the importation of second-hand cars into the country. Senator Ben Murray Bruce made the comments while his committee paid a working visit to the assembly plant of the Volkswagen Of Nigeria Automobile Limited in Lagos.

Senator Bruce said that automakers should have long-term payment plans for low-income earners so as to facilitate their acquisition of new vehicles. Nigeria is one of the highest importers of motor vehicles and it is not the first time in the nation’s history the government will attempt to ban second-hand cars.

Poor power supply and the sheer difficulty of doing business in Nigeria has meant that over the years, many manufacturers can only assemble vehicles in Nigeria at prices beyond the reach of the common man.
