FG Suspends 3 Prisons Officers Over Ngilari’s Release

For allegedly conniving to facilitate the release from prison of the former governor of Adamawa State, James Bala Ngilari, who was sentenced to five-year jail term for graft, the Federal Government has suspended three senior officials of the Nigeria Prisons Service till further notice.

The Federal Government has begun probing the roles played by the suspended officials in the convoluted release of Ngilari from prison, barely a month after his sentencing, to determine whether or not they are still worthy of being retained as staff of the NPS.

The suspension of the three top officials came barely a week after the Controller-General of the NPS, Ahmed Ja’afaru, expressed shock over the unbecoming action of the officers and denied the involvement of his office in the embarrassing action.

The officers suspended are: Peter Yeni Tenkwa, a Controller of Prisons; Abubakar Abaka, a Deputy Controller of Prisons, and John Bukar, a nurse and Superintendent of Prisons.

A letter dated April 3, 2017, and signed by Director/Secretary of the Board, Mr. Sunday Dan Ogu, ordered the suspension of the three officers, pending the outcome of  investigations into the matter.

A statement signed by the Prisons Public Relations Officer, Enoboro Francis, on behalf of the Comptroller-General of NPS, said a new Controller and Officer in-charge had been posted to take over the state command and Yola Prison respectively.

Enobore said a medical doctor to oversee the prison clinic had also been deployed to Yola Prison with immediate effect, adding that all the new officials had since assumed duties.
