Throwback! See How Female Nigeria Police Officers Looked Like In 1948 (Photo)

The uniform worn by Nigerian female police officers about 69 years ago before independence could have passed for a nice party wear. This is a throwback picture of female members of the Nigeria Police Force during a parade in Sokoto State – northern part of Nigeria as taken in the year 1948. The women reportedly belong to the regular unit of the Nigeria Police Force as they were inspected by a male superior before a patrol in the North-West geopolitical zone. Just as the police has been modernized and restructured over the years, the uniform has been improved to suit the current taste of clothing as seen in the 21st century.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) established in 1820 is the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria with a staff strength of about 371,800. There are currently plans to increase the force to 650,000, adding 280,000 new recruits to the existing 370,000.

The NP is a very large organization consisting of 36 State commands grouped into 12 zones and 7 administrative organs. The agency is currently headed by IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris.
