Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has raised alarm over the negotiations between the government and the Amalgamated Union of Traders and Cattle Breeders Association Union (AUTCBAU) to call off protest to stop the transportation of foods and Cattle to the southern part of Nigeria.

The Forum stated that the decision to call off the strike was initiated by the President, Muhammadu Buhari through the Chief of Staff to the president, Professor Ibrahim Gambari and brokered by Governor Yahya Bello of Kogi State.

The forum said the strike was necessitated due to repeated attacks and threat on the traders and Cattle Breeders.

According to report made available to newsmen on Friday in Abuja by the Forum’s Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said, “The Forum welcomes the decision of the Federal Government to address the prolonged grievance of transporters who are subjected to multiple taxation and extortion in Federal highways.

“These illegal checkpoints numbering over 100 has been pronounced illegal yet they are tolerated by authorities. We hope that the newly agreed decision will be immediately and comprehensively enforced.”
