University Of Lagos Alumni Building Gutted By Fire

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka’s Alumni Association Building caught fire on Sunday, completely destroying it.

The university’s spokesperson, Mrs. Joke Alaga-Ibraheem, confirmed the occurrence on Sunday in an interview with the cause of the fire still under investigation.

She claimed that the fire began about ten in the morning but was successfully extinguished few minutes later by school firefighters.

She claimed that the school fire service came fast to the event after being instantly notified by security personnel on the scene who had discovered the fire.
She stated that the building had previously been sealed off for the purpose of determining the source of the fire and that the quick response had minimized damage to the structure.
When she spoke with our correspondent at 4.30 p.m., she claimed there had been no fatalities reported and that everything had been brought under control.

The management of the University of Lagos later spoke on the fire incident that affected the Alumni Association Building in the school premises.

According to a statement by the school’s communication unit on Sunday, the fire only affected the Alumni Association Building and investigation has commenced on the cause of the incident.

The statement released was titled ‘Fire Incident At Unilag Alumni Association Building Has Been Resolved.’

It read, “The fire incident which occurred at the UNILAG Alumni Association Building at about 10.00 a.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2022 has been effectively put out.

“The fire was swiftly checked by officers of the Fire Service, after it was detected by security operatives at the location.

“This prompt response prevented any further damage to the building.

“The affected area has since been cordoned off for investigation.

“Members of the University Community and general public are hereby assured that no fatality was recorded, and the situation is fully under control,” the statement disclosed.
