Properties Worth Millions Lost to Adire Market Fire in Abeokuta

An unfortunate fire outbreak on Monday night gutted an Adire market in the ancient town of Abeokuta.

A midnight fire outbreak has consumed the popular Adire market in Itoku area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Monday night, destroying properties worth millions of naira. About ten fabrics stores and structures were destroyed by the fire.

Some of the traders; Toyin Akiode, Fausat Balogun and Nike Sorunke said they were alerted at midnight that their stores had been gutted by fire. They therefore appealed to the government and relevant agencies to assist them with funds to cushion the effect of the loss.

Speaking on the incident, Lanre Edun, Abeokuta South Local Government chairman assured that the government would look into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He however advised the people to be safety conscious at all times and ensure that efficient insurance policies cover their goods and structures in case of unexpected losses like the fire.

Although some traders said an electrical spark could have started the fire, the cause of the fire which was quenched by men of the fire service is still unknown.
