According to reports we are monitoring, Mr Obafaiye Shem, the Lagos State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has been suspended.

His suspension comes on the heels of his now famous ‘oga at the top’ comment which went viral after his embarrassing ordeal at the Channels Television breakfast programme – Sunrise Daily.

  1. This is very uncalled for. Who employed him? Y is he being suspended? The lagos Commandant? That spells a high rank, He has been there, in the system, y suspend hm nw?
They shud nt rub it in on themselves, pls. It has nafn 2 do wit them even if he was on d their uniform. Mr Shem is jst late, he shud av been born a century ago.
Nscdc shud respect the likes ov our first lady, Mr shem, our past president, nd sme ov our senators instead ov takin it personal.

  2. This is gross & highly uncalled for! This is rather an unfortunate situation mr Obafaiye got caught in, it could have happened to anybody. Most of us are guilty of this same thing, not bothering with the little details as what resulted into this embarrassing situation for the commandant. Nonetheless, it does not warrant him being suspended! Like we ve learnt, the guy is good @ his job, so its gross putting him on suspension. The authorities should rather put together a seminar or a platform that allows their staff to ßƺ conversant with such details esp in the technology field.

Am S̶̲̥̅Ơ̴̴̴̴̴̴͡ sorry this happened to the poor guy, though it was a “funny” situation which should have been settled with a simple admission “I don’t know” by the commandant, am S̶̲̥̅Ơ̴̴̴̴̴̴͡ sure that would not have been as bad as the case we have now. Very pathetic indeed!

  3. Being the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, those not make him a professor in English language. If he’s good @ d job (security matter) what then is the use of english? What we need in this country is not those that are good in english language but those who are good in carrying out their job effectively. Its wong to suspend him. The grammatical errors made by our first lady in some public function, has not lead to her removal as d first lady,so why will they suspend an officer not because he made wrong judgment or he’s suspended as a result of fraud. Its just too unfortunate…

    • That is true Jakes. You see the developed nations, many of them do not care about English, but their economy is functioning. Why? it is because their emphases is on specialization on their job. Seminars every six months, updating their information etc. Take an American out of their field of specialization and you find no reply.

    • Hi Jake, your reference to the First Lady is not quite apt, but I agree with you that grammarians and literary icons have neither proven themselves nor contributed much to the development of this country. Most of them are an apology in public office; but outside, they either profess all kinds of impracticable stuff or engage in arm chair criticisms. If you need examples: prof Soyinka, prof Nwabueze, prof Eme awa, dr Pat Utomi -the list is endless, I see all of them as mere theorists. Nigeria does not need any more talker. We need practical people – sqaure pegs in square holes please.
      God bless Nigeria.

  4. Suspension? Pls he shd b called back. He shd ve jx admitted he didn’t kn it nd da wld ve saved him of ds newest slogan n al d attractions. Most of dz so called ogas can’t read ABC wtout jumping some of d alphabets , its jx cox mr shem is unfortunate to be caught in ds web of shame!!

  5. This is not fair,I think he should not be suspended but rather correction should be made, the man is good in his job he should be given a second chance even if it was the oga at the he would have made the same mistake. Remember do to others what u will like them to do to u,it might be ur turn tomoRrow

  6. This is not fair,I think he should not be suspended but rather correction should be made, the man is good in his job he should be given a second chance even if it was the oga at the top, he would have made the same mistake. 7. The man is doing a great job on security under his comand. We will all recollect his efforts in curbing the pipeline vandalization, no one talk of his technological inability. How many of the “Oga at the top” know the websites of their respective ministries and parastatal? Better still, how many of the panel of interviewers at the program can recite the national anthem nor pledge not to talk of securing our dangerous encironment. Its so sad that all we always hammer on is paper qualifications and not what you can do. Suspending him is very bad, what they need do is to train them effectively and not suspending him.

  8. I saw this coming especially with the persistence of Maupe Olaogun and co.@ Channels TV. It has been their attitude to pester guests on set! and it’s totally wrong!! They went on and on, pushing for more “talk,” pestering the guy KNOWING fully well that he wasn’t IT/Internet savvy. As much as they wanted fun out of this, they are professionals, and we know how this works! They know when and where to quit stalking on set! I was quite disappointed! But they got their fun a-la Channels TV style, and of course, with the help of the commandant aka Oga At The Top!

  9. Ena jr I think yoÙ shud shut up bcos you are saying crap! Its Nigerians like you that are spoiling the system…granted that his suspension was not really necessary, the crew at channels were doing their journalistic duties by wanting and insisting he tells them the website of nscdc, not out of malign but clarification! Do you know the nscds blatantly demand money as high as 300k for employment that isn’t even guarranteed? I’m sorry to say but ask yourself why a man of his rank and position doesn’t even know the website of his outfit? Yet they tell timing job seekers to go an apply online! Does that not tell you they don’t even check their websites to vet applications? Let’s get real people! Our corrupt, inept and undiciplined mentality has rili affected our reasoning faculty! We r doomed if we cannot see wrong and admit it! Thanks

  10. The question being asked and d insistence with which it was being asked is paramount cos people r being scammed via d SUPPOSED NSCDS WEBSITE in d guise of employment. If Mr Shem cannot “categorically” tell d public d home site of d corporation he represents, I’m not sorry to say this: “HE SHOULD GET THE F**K OUT OF THAT OFFICE”… D’you know how much “unemployed” masses have parted with to secure that job, yet no show..and he’s telling us Oga @ d top n all what not… Its a shame!

    • Big one bro, a very big shame,at least for D̶̲̥̅̊ sake of D̶̲̥̅̊ interview he shud have memorised it,haba!!!! Ђδω can he go on air ¤Α̲̅~Ω̴̩̩~d̶̲̥̅̊* make a mess of nija on t.v, dis z absolute nonsense, abeg oga at D̶̲̥̅̊ top do somefin biko, LWKMD

  11. Let’s not take Mr Shem’s out of proportion. He was suspended, not sacked. This isn’t d time to start accusing anyone or laying blames. This also isn’t about grammatical blunders or errors. I bet if dis same question was asked in his native language he’d still have missed it. Truth is dat he was caught off-guard. He wasn’t prepared; hence a simple admission to d fact dat he dint know wat d website was wud av sufficed. What we shd focus on now r d morals and lessons to be drawn from his experience. It is often said that when opportunity meets an unprepared man, its d funeral of prosperity. This same interview cud also have elevated him if he was prepared for it. We clamour for tinz to be as dey r in d developed worlds yet we’re crying dat he was suspended. If dis were to be over der I bet u he wud either have resigned or been sacked. What we need to do is call ourselves to order and help save dis poor man and his family d shame dis has brought upon em by stopping d whole “my oga @ d top” jokes. Let’s not push dis man over the edge. A mistake was made; mistake I’m sure he’d never repeat. Thank God he got a suspension instead of termination. Let’s all look forward to d time he’d be recalled.

  12. So wat r we sayin tat mr.shem’s attitude on air was G̶̲̥̅Ơ̴̴̴̴͡.̮Ơ̴̴̴͡D̶̲̥̅?? Common for goodness sake wat z he doin there at D̶̲̥̅̊ top of nscdc biz if he can’t rep well? Fine his suspension was kinda unfair buh abeg he shud have prepared himself before showing his face on channels t.v he shud studied dere constitution or rules ¤Α̲̅~Ω̴̩̩~d̶̲̥̅̊* regulations or wtaever guides them before going on air,wat if they have asked him D̶̲̥̅̊. Date nscdc was created? Tat means say wahala go D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥,dis goes along way to show D̶̲̥̅̊ state of employment ere in nija, instead to put qualified pipo tat can rep very well both in work capability ¤Α̲̅~Ω̴̩̩~d̶̲̥̅̊* ability na so so I’m them go D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥ do,DIS z just D̶̲̥̅̊ genesis more still D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥ come

  13. Please friends, I have been using the phase ‘myoga@thetop’ but now I have stop due to the negative impact coming from it,
I heard in the news that since last week(the time of the interview) that Mr shem have been having sleepless nights and even the children and wife have been receiving embarrassment from neighbours and school mates, even on social networks. Early today, I downloaded a Joke audio from a south Africa website about this same Mr shem, now i think it is becoming a Nigeria mistake and no longer Mr shem anymore.
Nigerians, With all these, please! I beg of you all that we should all stop using the phase to avoid other negative result. Make the family no go commit suicide oo
    #thanks for your understanding#

  14. I thought it was a joke when I saw the broadcast on internet because I did not view it on Channels T.V. All the same his criticisms and the subsequent suspension was not based on wrong use of Englsh but was based on his inability to have been updated with the current technological know- how.. At least he should have known the meaning of website and as well know the official website of NSCDC.

  15. I wholistically go with the suspension of Mr Shem over this ‘my oga at the top’ mess. Issues like this should not be treated with bias or sentiments, but with adequate compliance to the necessary sanctions. To start with, how can a commandant of NSCDC not know its official website? It is like a mother of a house not knowing where the front door of her house is. I praise the work of the admirable and inquisitive journalists of Channels Tv in this matter especially by making this ‘my oga at the top’ video clip public. An interview like this with NTA would have swept ‘my oga at the top’ video clip under the carpet.
Nobody should feel any form of pity for him Mr Shem abi Mr Shame….whichever at all. Like it is said in pidgin english that ‘ when breeze blow, fowl yansh go open’ .The breeze has started blowing.
    Nigeria is revolving……….Beware!!!

  16. I dont know u av to b a prof b4 u could know d meaning of website!d suaspension was spot on 4me 4 d public disgrace of his outfit;afterall it wasn’t demotion ,compulsory retirement or other grievious punishments

  17. As far as I’m concern, my oga on top, Mr Shem; has become a hero of a sort. He has opened a new vista in d study of Public Admin. Generated a new theory, My Oga at the top, to be studied & utilized by Public Admin scholars to help us solve d many public admin problems in the country. Am already exploring the theory, ‘My Oga at the top theory of Public Admin’. Thanks to Mr. Shem.
But they should come him back & properly school him on ICT.
