Obafemi Martins scored his first goal for MLS side Seattle Sounders in a match versus Colorado Rapids for their first victory this season on Saturday.
Martin started the game but waited until the 27th minute to fire in the match winner which silenced the Colorado Rapids’ fans.
The former Levante of Spain forward scored from a rebound after Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin saved a shot from Shalrie Joseph.
Coach Sigi Schmid- tutored side will breathe a sigh of relief after getting their first victory of the 2013 season away at Colorado.
“It means a lot. To a certain extent, we really don’t care how we played because we really needed a win,” Schmid said.
“We had a little bit of good fortune in the back, but it’s about time we got some good fortune.”
Schmid however expects his side to build on their good performance after the victory.
“It’s good to get it behind us and now we can move on,” he said.
“The West is pretty tight, so if we can win the games we have in hand, we’re going to be back in the mix for a playoff spot,” Schmid added.
Martin’s back flip thrilled the travelling fans and Schmid was quick to appraise his contribution.
“Our fans can see what he brings to the table, “Schmid said.
“Every time we see the back flip, I know we scored, so I’m not worried.”
The club’s next regular season match will be on May 4th against the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
