Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence On Handset Thief

JudgeThe Supreme Court, yesterday in Abuja sealed the fate of the ring leader of a notorious armed robbery gang who has been a thorn in the flesh of the people of Kwara State as it upheld the judgement of a High Court which had earlier sentenced the accused to death by hanging for stealing a handset.

The apex court in a unanimous decision also restored the decision of the high court which has earlier sentenced the accused person to death by hanging.

The convicted armed robber – Salisu Isiaka, who pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him was discontented with the death sentence passed on him by the High Court and proceeded to the Court of Appeal which set aside the decision of the high court and released him from prison.

In a unanimous decision, Justice Stanley Alagoa who read the lead judgment, held that the high court was right, adding that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt as the death sentence was in order.

Isiaka’s journey to prison and gallows eventually began on the evening of August 27, 2009 when he attacked one Mulikat AbdulKareem using a cudgel with which he hit her on the head several times until she was dispossessed of her handset.

However, Isiaka’s luck ran out as a team of policemen on patrol in the area got a distress call and quickly got to the scene and shot him in the leg as he escaped to a nearby building from where he was arrested.
