Nigeria’s senior national cricket team kept promotion hopes alive with an emphatic 8-wicket success over Bahrain at Farmer Field in the ongoing ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 6 in Jersey.
With one match to go Nigeria is in contention for the promotion to the WCL Division 5 as the top two after the five-game round-robin series, which ends on Saturday, qualify for the slot.
Saheed Akolade (6-27 in 8 overs) won the Man of the Match (MOM) award for inspiring the Nigerians with his fast bowling, which ripped through the Bahraini’s batting line-up. Only three of the opponent’s batsmen reached double figures in a total of 104 in 33 overs.
Another player who impressed with ball was Oluseye Olympio, returning figures of 3-23 in 10 overs.
“Saheed’s bowling was awesome today and Oluseye did a great job in supporting him,” captain of the team Adekunle Adegbola said after the game. “Segun also occupied the crease well and did a good job for the team.”
A realistic feat in the runs saw opener Segun Olayinka make 50˟ in 80 balls, including four 4s and a 6, in a victory secured in 28.1 overs.
Presently third in the points table ahead of Saturday’s final fixtures, victory for Nigeria against Argentina will see them regain their second spot and gain promotion to Division 5 pending the outcome of the top-of-the table clash between Jersey and Vanuatu. Nigeria and Vanuatu maintains 6 points apiece, with the latter having a more difficult hurdle to cross in hosts, Jersey.
“Our last game now is against Argentina and there is nothing more or less for us than to be victorious. We’re going to give it our best to finish in the top two, Adegbola added”
