The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, said the force had commenced training of 160,000 personnel at its institutions nationwide in preparation for the forthcoming elections.
This is contained a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by CSP Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer.
According to the statement, the police personnel are receiving relevant training on election duties for Ekiti and Osun governorship, and for the 2015 general elections.
The statement said the I-G disclosed this when the US ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwistle, paid him a visit.
“The officers are receiving specialised training on electoral laws, election security, crowd control skills, anti-riot operations, covert intelligence operations and general principles of democratic policing”, it said.
Abubakar said the measure was to ensure hitch-free elections in those states later in the year as well as in the 2015 general elections.
Entwistle promised US increased collaboration with the Nigeria Police in the area of capacity building and other security related matters.
He said the US Government was committed to the growth and success of Nigeria’s democracy and economy. (NAN)
