An Australian woman from Tasmania has reportedly become a mother at the age of 62, making her the oldest woman to give birth in Australia.

It was reported that the baby is the first child of the woman and her 78-year-old partner.

The woman was said to have given birth on Monday by cesarean section at Melbourne’s Frances Perry House private hospital.

The baby was born premature but is said to be progressing well, along with her mother.

The couple is said to have conceived overseas through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), using a donor embryo.

It is reported the previous Australian record was held by a 60-year-old woman who gave birth in 2010.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one-third of women who gave birth in 2013 were likely to be aged between 30 and 34 years.

In the same year, women aged 45 or over amounted to just 0.2 per cent of those who gave birth.
