Terrorism, Banditry, Others Testing Nation’s Democracy, Says Magashi

Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi has stated that the increase in security challenges across the country reason for the deployment of the military in internal security operations.

Magashi, however, commended the efforts of the military, particularly, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at focusing on doctrinal developments to address the security challenges confronting the country.

The minister stated this at the graduation ceremony of 13 officers of the Airforce War College Course 7/2021 held at Nigeria Airforce officers mess, Makurdi.

The minister was represented by the director of military affairs, Federal Ministry of Defence, Sunday Musa.

He stated that terrorism, kidnapping, insurgency, as well as ethno religion crises, are the major challenges testing the nation democracy.

He explained that the nature of warfare posing new challenges to the security forces necessitated innovation and contemporary ways to tackle the challenges.

He said, “Our country is currently experiencing different forms of security challenges, these include terrorism, insurgency, armed banditry and kidnapping. Similarly, our democracy is also being tested by ethno- religion crises as well as incidents of farmer/herders conflicts.

“These challenges have had grace consequences on human/ material resources of the nation, hence, the inevitable intervention and involvement of the military in internal security operation across the country.”
