Relocate To Safer Areas, Gov. Wamakko Tells Residents Of Flood-Prone Areas In Sokoto

floodGov. Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State has called on communities in flood-prone areas of the state to relocate immediately to safer places.

Wamakko made the call when the District and Village Heads in Wamakko Local Government Area paid him Sallah homage at the Government House in Sokoto on Sunday.

According to the governor, the call became imperative in view of the flood alert given by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency for 2013 raining season.

“The agency had predicted that 90 local governments in ten states, including Sokoto, may record heavy rains capable of causing devastating flood this year.

“To be forewarned is to be forearmed and we are yet to forget the impact of the devastating flood recorded in the state in September 2010”, Wamakko added.

The governor also said that the state government would do everything humanly possible to ensure the safety of lives and property.

He said that the majority of the 23 local governments of the state were flood-prone, adding, “we are, therefore, concerned about the potential pandemic.”

The leader of the delegation, Alhaji Ahamed Kalambaina, who is also the Chairman of Wamakko local government, said the visit was to express appreciation to the governor for his ongoing efforts to transform the state. (NAN)
