The United States regained the Ryder Cup after a sizzling display at Hazeltine National on Sunday, ending a streak of three consecutive defeats in the biennial event.

Needing five points from the 12 last-day singles matches, the Americans sealed victory over Europe when Ryan Moore beat Lee Westwood in the seventh match of the day.

Moore two-putted on No.18 for a 1-up victory over Westwood, giving the Americans a 15-10 lead that sealed the victory.

The win completed a two-year soul search for the Americans after they were routed in Gleneagles for a third straight defeat. They formed a task force to address the shortcomings and delivered an emphatic performance at Hazeltine.

He ultimately had to ask for one man to be removed after hurling abuse at him during Saturday’s afternoon fourballs, but most of the European team suffered at some point from shouts from the gallery.

American players and vice-captains attempted to maintain order during matches and messages were posted on scoreboards on the first tee asking spectators to report unruly behaviour to officials.

A statement released by the PGA of America on Sunday read: “This week we’ve seen some of the largest and most exciting Ryder Cup crowds ever.

“Minnesota is home to some of the best sports fans in the country and we are so grateful for their enthusiastic support and warm hospitality.

“Rooted in the ideals of sportsmanship and international goodwill, the Ryder Cup is about having a spirited passion for not only the victory, but for the game of golf.

“We are encouraging all spectators on Sunday (Monday AEST) to be passionate and support their team in a way that is respectful to those around them, the players, and the Ryder Cup.

“Our security staff will continue to enforce a zero tolerance policy, removing from the course any fans who are disruptive in any way, including the use of vulgar or profane language directed at the players.
