House Of Reps Puts Allowances Into focus
The salaries and allowances of members of Nigeria’s legislatures have always remained shrouded in secrecy. Despite the promise of the leadership of the 8th National Assembly to open the finance of the Legislature, it has been business as usual.
However, Honorable Abdulmumin Jibrin, a suspended member of the House and a former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations has shed light for the first time on how much legislators earn. Hon. Jibrin had claimed members of the House of Reps earn as much as N10 million per month.
For a house with 360 elected representatives who all serve four-year terms, it brings the cost of the lower house alone to N172bn for every four years.
